TWO QUESTIONS TO ASK BEFORE YOU HIRE
A MOVER FOR A MOVE IN NEW YORK STATE

1. Ask to See a Copy of the Mover's New York State DOT Certificate

Does the certificate carry the same name as the name on his business card? Write the certificate number down and check with your local DOT office (in the metropolitan New York area, call 1-718-482-4814) to verify its authenticity. Unlicensed "movers" have been known to counterfeit a certificate or use another company's certificate number.

2. Ask to See Proof of His Workers' Compensation Insurance

It's required by law. If he can't produce proof of insurance coverage, you could be liable if a worker is injured while moving your household goods. Also, it means the mover is breaking the law and trying to lower his costs by not protecting his workers. He probably also is paying substandard wages, which means you won't have professionals handling your valuable furniture!
